About Applied Materials

Applied Materials is the world leader in materials engineering solutions used to produce virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world. Our innovations power the future—from AI and cloud computing to autonomous vehicles and next-generation mobile devices.

TheSystem To Materials (STM)group bridges the gap between materials, manufacturing, and systems to co-optimize every step from atoms to architectures. The STM team inEindhoven, Netherlands, develops advanced EDA (Electronic Design Automation) software used both internally and externally. Our focus lies in physical layout, design rule definition and validation, and automatic layout generation—solving complex algorithmic and performance challenges in runtime and memory.

Your Impact

As a Senior Software Engineer in our STM team, you will work on cutting-edge algorithmic solutions that directly impact semiconductor design and manufacturing. You’ll tackle deep computational geometry problems, develop high-performance solvers, and help shape the next generation of layout analysis tools.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and implement advanced algorithms for 2D geometrical shape processing, including custom sweepline and scanline techniques.

  • Extend classical paradigms to support complex polygonal shapes, including those with curved edges.

  • Develop and optimize spatial data structures (e.g., interval trees, segment trees, spatial indexing) for layout validation and rule checking.

  • Build and tune solvers for linear programming and pathfinding problems from scratch.

  • Own the full lifecycle of algorithmic development—from problem analysis and prototyping to implementation, testing, and performance tuning.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate solutions into production systems and influence technical direction.

Example Projects

Develop a shape-sorting engine to validate complex layout rules.
Implement algorithms to split large polygons into sub-polygons with a maximum number of vertices for efficient processing.

Key requirements

  • Strong proficiency in algorithmic software development, ideally in high-performance or computational geometry environments.

  • Deep understanding of geometrical computation, including sweepline algorithms and spatial data structures.

  • Proven ability to build and optimize custom solvers for mathematical problems.

  • Strong Experience with C++ and Python; familiarity with Boost libraries is a plus.

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of architectural decisions and algorithmic design.

Benefits at Applied Materials (Netherlands)

  • Competitive salarywith performance-based bonuses and a €2,000 referral reward
  • Stock optionsvia RSUs and a 15% discounted Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP)
  • Health & wellbeing supportincluding €200 wellness budget, screenings, and EAP access
  • Tuition assistancefor job-relevant education and continuous learning
