As a Customer Engineer (AIx Data Analytics-Enabled), you'll serve as Applied’s direct liaison with our customers and quickly solve high-value problems on their behalf. By collaborating closely with our customers onsite to install, maintain, and upgrade Applied Materials equipment, and with our internal teams to improve business processes, you’ll make a significant impact on ensuring peak performance and deliver exceptional service, while becoming an integral part of Applied Materials' dynamic field team.

We empower our Customer Engineer (AIx Data Analytics-Enabled) through comprehensive on-the-job training and the use of advanced digital tools and immersive technology, including Augmented Reality (AR) to support the systems and processes that underpin everyday semiconductor chip production.

As a Field Service Engineer [Customer Engineer] at Applied Materials, you serve as the direct liaison with customers, collaborating closely to install, maintain, and upgrade equipment. You'll use digital analytics for troubleshooting and apply basic diagnostic techniques to assess and address technical issues. Your responsibilities include performing preventative and corrective maintenance on various systems such as electrical, vacuum, mechanical, plasma, hydraulic, and gas systems. Additionally, you'll coordinate and communicate directly with customers to ensure smooth operations and exceptional service.

Role Summary

Develops applied technical and analytical skills through formal training and hands-on experience. Works within established procedures with moderate supervision while increasingly leveraging data analytics and AI-driven insights to improve equipment performance, uptime, and service quality.

Key Responsibilities

Core Service Delivery

  • Performs all standard service activities through Tier I independently; supports Tier II activities with guidance.
  • Executes routine preventive maintenance within established timelines and completes high-quality repairs.
  • Verifies operational performance of system equipment and ensures compliance with specifications.

AI & Data Analytics Integration

  • Utilizes data analytics tools and dashboards to monitor equipment health, predict failures, and optimize performance.
  • Collects, cleans, and interprets equipment data to identify trends, anomalies, and improvement opportunities.
  • Applies basic AI/ML concepts (e.g., predictive maintenance, anomaly detection) to improve decision-making and reduce downtime.
  • Collaborates with engineering and digital teams to deploy and refine AI-driven solutions in the fab environment.

Problem Solving & Troubleshooting

  • Diagnoses and resolves technical issues using structured methodologies, documentation, and test equipment.
  • Uses data-driven insights in addition to traditional troubleshooting techniques.
  • Identifies process, hardware, or software-related issues and escalates complex problems when necessary.

Customer & Operations Support

  • Responds to fab issues, participates in escalation calls, and communicates effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Supports projects focused on cost reduction, yield improvement, and uptime optimization, including analytics-driven initiatives.
  • Takes ownership of customer satisfaction within assigned area and supports coordination of service plans with customer management.

Knowledge Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Documents learnings, best known methods (BKM), and contributes to knowledge management systems.
  • Continuously improves technical and analytical skills, staying updated on emerging AI and data analytics tools.
  • Applies IP protection and data governance guidelines in all work.

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or related field.

Experience

  • 2–4 years of experience in semiconductor equipment, manufacturing, or related field.
  • Exposure to data analytics tools (e.g., Python, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, JMP, etc.) is highly preferred.
  • Basic understanding of AI/ML concepts or experience in data-driven projects is an advantage.
