Senior Counsel, Trade Compliance

This is a great opportunity for an experienced global trade compliance attorney to join a multidisciplinary Global Litigation & Compliance team to help lead implementation and sustainment for Applied Materials’ compliance programs.  Based in Santa Clara, CA, Austin, TX or Washington, DC this will be a critical role reporting into the Senior Director, Trade Compliance.  This Senior Counsel, Trade Compliance will join a growing team of dedicated in-house legal support to the company’s global trade function and work horizontally with key business stakeholders.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Counseling the business on global trade requirements and strategies
  • Analyzing the evolving trade laws and regulations applicable to the company, and their impact on strategy and operations
  • Conducting and advising on trade compliance risk assessments, audits and due diligence reviews
  • Providing critical programmatic support for trade compliance organization enhancements throughout the global enterprise
  • Designing and advising on enhancements for trade compliance policies, operating procedures and technology control plans
  • Developing and delivering trade compliance training for a variety of audiences
  • Assist in M&A and joint venture risk assessments, due diligence and integration plans
  • Assist in trade compliance-related internal investigations
  • Undertaking special projects and supporting other compliance program initiatives

Major Areas of Responsibility

As an in-house attorney focused on export controls and customs and import regulations, you will advise on cross-border transactions and a wide range of international trade compliance matters.  This senior counsel position will work closely with peers in developing and enhancing both US and non-US compliance processes as geopolitics continue to influence global trade strategy and business for the semiconductor industry.  You will coordinate with external legal counsel, as appropriate, and provide legal advice to the company’s global trade function as well as business units and departments.  You will have frequent contact with internal stakeholders throughout the company’s global operations, including executives.  

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate degree and a minimum of 6-8 years of experience in advising multinational businesses on trade compliance matters, including US export controls, sanctions programs,
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team, and ability to gain the trust of business stakeholders to achieve a desired objective
  • Problem Solving: Proactively identifies and solves complex problems, thinking beyond existing solutions and frameworks
  • Excellent communication skills: Ability to clearly articulate and visually present complex legal advice for senior executives; excellent written work product (compliance policies, procedures, training)
  • Passion for compliance work!

Desired Qualifications

  • In-house experience in the semiconductor industry strongly preferred
  • Subject matter expertise with non-US export and import regulatory regimes
  • Experience in government relations and trade strategy deployment
  • Language skills (Mandarin, Korean, or Japanese) are highly desirable

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
