Role Summary

Applied Materials is establishing the Service Technologies Lab (STL) in Singapore to develop, prototype, and mature robotic and cobot‑enabled service solutions for future service operations.

The Robotics Engineer (NCG) is an entry‑level engineering role intended for high‑potential graduates with practical robotics exposure. The role supports senior robotics, systems engineers and technicians through hands‑on development, integration, testing, and documentation of real robotic systems.

This position is ideal for candidates with strong academic foundations, meaningful project or internship experience, and a clear motivation to grow into a disciplined, well‑rounded robotics engineer working at the intersection of software, hardware, and systems integration.

Role Intent

This role is designed to:

  • Enable faster and higher‑quality execution by senior robotics engineers
  • Enable strong habits around engineering discipline, documentation, and testing early in the STL.
  • Develop practical skills across robotics software, mechatronics, and system integration
  • Provide a clear growth path toward robotics applications or systems engineering roles
  • This is not a research‑only role and not limited to simulation environments.

Key Responsibilities

Robotics & Systems Engineering (Entry Level)

  • Support development and integration of robotic and cobot systems under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Assist with robot bring‑up, calibration, basic programming, and commissioning activities.
  • Contribute to portions of system engineering specifications, interface definitions, and test documentation.
  • Execute structured tests and experiments; clearly document results, observations, and issues.
  • Identify and help troubleshoot engineering problems related to robot behavior, integration, or usability.

Software‑Oriented Robotics Support

  • Candidates with a stronger software background will:
  • Assist with development and debugging of robotics software using Python and/or C++.
  • Work hands‑on with either ROS including nodes, topics, TF, and basic system integration or suppliers established SDKs.
  • Use simulation and visualization tools such as Gazebo (or equivalent) to support development and testing.
  • Support integration of robot drivers, sensors, and application‑level logic under supervision.

Mechanical / Mechatronics‑Oriented Robotics Support

  • Candidates with a stronger mechanical or mechatronics background will:
  • Support mechanical design and integration of robotic systems, end‑effectors, fixtures, and sensors.
  • Assist with CAD design, layout, and documentation for robotics or automation applications.
  • Participate in installation and integration of sensors, actuators, controllers, and peripheral equipment.
  • Support prototype builds, modifications, and lab integration activities.

Prototyping, Testing & Documentation

  • Contribute to rapid prototyping activities, including hands‑on lab work.
  • Support use of 3D printing and other rapid fabrication methods (bonus capability).
  • Capture design assumptions, interfaces, test procedures, and results with accuracy and clarity.
  • Follow established processes for documentation, version control, and engineering reviews.

Collaboration & Learning

  • Work closely with senior engineers, technicians, and cross‑functional teams in the lab.
  • Demonstrate curiosity, initiative, and openness to feedback.
  • Actively build knowledge of Applied Materials’ engineering practices, safety expectations, and product development lifecycle.
  • Participate hands‑on in system integration, assembly, and testing activities.

Core Competencies:

  • Systems & Technology Integration
  • Robotics Fundamentals
  • Problem Solving
  • Technical Documentation
  • Mechanical / Software Engineering Practices
  • Accuracy & Attention to Detail
  • Systems Thinking
  • Innovation & Curiosity
  • AMAT Product Development Life Cycle

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • Demonstrated practical robotics exposure through projects, internships, research labs, or competitions.
  • Hands‑on experience in at least one of the following:
  • ROS / ROS2, Gazebo, or similar robotics frameworks and tools
  • Mechanical design and CAD for robotics or automation systems
  • Comfortable working hands‑on with physical systems in a lab environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical
  • Exposure to both robotics software and mechanical / mechatronics integration.
  • Internship or project experience involving:
  • Industrial or collaborative robot arms
  • Sensors, controllers, actuators, and robot peripherals
  • Robotics simulation, visualization, or offline programming tools
  • Experience with:
  • Python and/or C++ in robotics or technical applications
  • CAD tools for robotics or automation design
  • 3D printing, rapid prototyping, or lab fabrication workflows
  • Demonstrated versatility across disciplines is highly desirable.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has depth in either robotics software or mechanical/mechatronics, with curiosity across the full system
  • Can demonstrate hands‑on project or internship experience, not theory alone
  • Shows self‑initiative, a growth mindset, and willingness to learn from senior engineers
  • Values documentation, clarity, and engineering discipline even at an early career stage
  • Wants to grow into a full robotics systems or applications engineering role
